Before I get into my criticisms of the book I have one last piece of praise for Broken Roads, one I want to be remembered. You feel the same confusion and fear the characters themselves are feeling and can practically hear the Hans Zimmer score getting louder as the pieces fall into place. Several times in the story when the S is about to hit the F, it takes the reader a moment to realize what’s going on. His other great strength is in building tension. Philisophical discussion almost never feels forced or out of place in a situation.

His characters, whether they be the the Wentworth, a soldier in search of redemption and a place to call home, or Raxx a mechanic trying to cure the world of the fear of improvement, each one has dynamic, interesting and complicated motives and views and they express them through both actions and words. It also brings along some new criticisms of societal functions such as bureaucracy which he paints as functioning more on animalistic fear and reactionary instincts than focused, calculating debate.

Theme’s like self-improvement, redemption, hard work and above all else how to be a man. Though the technology is still there, Broken Roads is focused on deeper themes that resonate with the soul of man. And in fact, it more resembles an old western book than a nuclear aftermath story.

You will not find any mutants, cyber-tech freaks, nano-machines or zombies in the world this man created out of whole cloth.
